2010 Elections Endorsments and NominationsThe Ulster County Democratic Committee held a meeting for the purposes of nominating candidates for the 2010 election on May 24, 2010 Kingston. A crowd of over 250 energized Democrats gathered at the Holiday Inn on Monday night for the party’s unofficial nominating convention to support the state-wide ticket and choose candidates for local and state office.Endorsements included Andrew Cuomo for Governor, presented by Ulster County Executive Mike Hein, Tom Dinapoli for New York State Comptroller, presented by Ulster County Comptroller Elliott Auerbach, Chuck Schumer for United States Senate, presented by Frank Dart and an endorsement of Kirsten Gillibrand, presented by Julie McQuain. All endorsements were unanimously voted by the Committee. The following candidates were nominated by the Committee:
Immediately prior to the County Convention, the City of Kingston Committee nominated Larry Ball to continue as the Kingston City Judge. Thank you to Larry Delarose and Seth Goldman for their interest in serving the people of Ulster County. Report on the activities of the County Committee during 2009 and a look ahead to 2010.Dear Ulster County Democrat:In 2009 the Committee nominated two pioneering women to lead our slate in the County-wide contests for County Court Judge and County Clerk - taking on two long-serving and well-known Republicans - and we fielded our largest and most diverse group of Legislative candidates ever. Meanwhile, the Judicial Convention for the Third District, covering seven counties in the region, overwhelmingly nominated Ulster's Jim Gilpatric for the State Supreme Court. Unfortunately, we could not overcome the groundswell of anti-Democratic sentiment that swept the nation in November. Despite some well-earned victories (including adding a new Supreme Court seat in Ulster County), we lost control of the Legislature and Republicans held on to both the Judgeship and County Clerk. In 2009 Ulster County had the highest Democratic turn-out in the region. Our chief goal, however, before the 2010 campaign begins in earnest is to determine what we can do better in the future. 42% turn-out, no matter how it compares to others, is not a foundation for victory. As we look ahead to 2010, many "old-timers" have spoken to us about the parallels to 1993-94. In those early years of our last Democratic president, local Democrats took a powerful one-two punch. We cannot let that happen again. The Obama Administration can already claim credit for a stimulus bill that staved off economic disaster and Congress is poised to pass the most sweeping reform of our health insurance system in nearly 50 years. And yet, polls show that Democrats are disengaged - with 1 in 5 already deciding not to vote next year - while Republicans, energized by Fox News and a steady diet of misrepresentations and outright lies, are poised to come out again in force. It is our job to combat apathy within our own ranks and defeat the misinformation campaign that has turned independents against the President's progressive agenda. Our Ulster County campaigns will be led this year by Assemblymembers Kevin Cahill and Frank Skartados, along with Comptroller Elliott Auerbach and Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum, all of whom are veteran campaigners. There is also active planning among the affected counties to challenge Republican incumbents in the 39th and 42nd Senate districts, as well as the 107th and 127th Assembly districts. There will be vibrant campaigns for Governor and both U.S. Senate seats. And of course, we will be supporting our irreplaceable Congressman, Maurice Hinchey, as he seeks a 10th term representing our communities. Maurice has turned up the volume lately calling out the last administration's failed foreign policy and seeking a return to effective financial regulations whose abandonment contributed to last year's collapse. Always a favorite target of the far right, we'll be proud to stand with Maurice again this fall. As you can see, there is a lot of work to be done, and we will require everyone's help to carry us to victory in November. As we begin another year, we want to thank you for your service to the Democratic Party and reaffirm our commitment to serving you. We are always eager to hear any suggestions or thoughts that you have! 2010 Candidates are RunningWhile rumors abound, our candidates page provides up to date information on all confirmed candidacys!Thank you 2009 Candidates!Thank you all for your hard work!We moved! As of March 1, 2009, the Ulster County Committee moved just up the street to:275 Fair Street Suite 14 Kingston, NY 12401 This is also known as the Opera Building.
